Boat detailing questions
The things owners ask us most before their first detail.
Do you detail boats in the water, or only on the trailer?
Both. We work on the trailer, at your dock and in the slip. What changes is the approach — anything below the waterline, like scum line removal or a full hull compound, is best done with the boat out of the water, so we will talk through the right timing when we quote it.
What actually causes that chalky, faded look on a hull?
Oxidation. UV exposure breaks down the surface of the gelcoat until it goes dull and powdery to the touch. It is not dirt and washing will not fix it — it has to be cut back with a compound, refined with a polish, and then sealed with a marine wax so it does not come straight back.
Do you wet sand gelcoat?
Yes, when the surface needs it. Heavy chalking and deeper scratches often will not come out with compound alone, so we wet sand to level the surface first, then compound and polish the sanding marks back out and seal it. That is the step that separates a hull that looks better from one that looks new. We only sand where there is enough gelcoat to take it safely — if there is not, we will tell you rather than risk going through it.
Can you get rid of the black scum line along the waterline?
In most cases, yes. Scum line comes off with a dedicated hull cleaner, and if the gelcoat underneath has been stained or etched we compound and polish it afterwards. Badly neglected hulls sometimes need more than one pass, and we will tell you that up front rather than after.
How often should a boat be detailed?
A full detail with wax at the start of the season and a wash-down at haul-out covers most owners in this region. Boats that live in the water all summer, or sit uncovered, generally want a mid-season wash and vinyl treatment as well.
Do you clean the vinyl seating and the bimini top?
Yes. Vinyl gets cleaned and treated with a UV protectant so it stays soft and does not crack, and bimini tops and canvas are cleaned as part of a full detail. Mildew and deep staining are quotable extras depending on how far it has gone.
What do you need from us on site?
Access to the boat and, in most cases, an outdoor outlet. If your site has no power or no water, say so when you book and we will plan for it.
How long does a boat detail take?
A wash and interior clean on a mid-size pontoon is usually a few hours. A full compound, polish and wax on a neglected hull can run most of a day or across two. We give you a realistic window when we quote, not an optimistic one.
